David Nufrio

As an experienced criminal defense attorney, David Nufrio served as the regional Deputy Public Defender in Sussex County for the New Jersey Office of the Public Defender.  In addition to a caseload he supervised the staff and pool attorneys, a support staff comprised of investigators, legal interns, and clerical employees designated to represent indigent adult and juvenile clients charged with indictable offenses.

As public defender he handled all types of cases, including representing clients who avoided the death penalty. He successfully handled a number of mental health defense cases without a loss and advocated for change in the treatment of those struggling to overcome personal challenges and addiction issues. His philosophical method is to get to know and understand his clients learning their backgrounds; to explore their current problem and needs, set to target an overall case strategy designed to achieve a beneficial favorable outcome.

His diverse legal background included working with the firm of McDermott, McGee and Ruprecht; employment as a video deposition operator; service as a Mediation Hearing Officer with the Franklin County Prosecutor’s Mediation Program in Columbus, Ohio; and a judicial clerkship with the Honorable Frederic G. Weber, J.S.C. in Sussex County.  He was employed as an associate with the law firm of Daggett and Kramer, before joining the Public Defender’s Office where he practiced for more than 31 years and later with the Law Firm of Jef Henninger and Kassem and Associates PC.

Mr. Nufrio holds a Bachelor of Arts degree majoring in Political Science and History from the University of Richmond in Virginia, and a Juris Doctorate from the Capital University Law School in Ohio. He is admitted to the bar in New Jersey, the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, and the United States Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit. He has been a judge for the Bar Association’s Moot Court Program, a CLE instructor on various criminal matters, and numerous presentations and speaking engagements including recently addressing the Chief Justice, law enforcement and legal community at the Criminal Justice Reform roll out.

A Sussex County resident, away from legal endeavors as further service to the community he volunteers as a coach for  local youth ice hockey teams, prior head coaching engagements with teams at the New Jersey Institute of Technology and East Stroudsburg University, and currently with the Newton-Lenape Valley High School Team.
